We do things differently at Ascent. We believe through the application of advances in AI that we can solve autonomous mobility. If we are successful, we will have discovered how to develop programs that can learn complex behavior in highly dynamic environments. By implementing DRL (deep reinforcement learning) research, we hope to train a single program to learn how to drive, fly, swim, and possibly even go into space.
We are looking for engineers and researchers with the ability to build and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly.
The work we do presents interesting and unique engineering challenges. Our Software Engineers are focused on creating the ideal software environment and infrastructure to support research. We use cutting edge technologies and high performance computing platforms like GPU’s and TPU’s to make our software infrastructure both on our robotic systems and in the cloud fast and easy to use.
As a member of the Research Engineering Team, you’ll be part of a highly collaborative team who can work closely together and help each other on different tasks. Together, you’ll provide our researchers with the tools and guidance to fully utilize computing resources, enabling research to progress at a faster pace.
This will involve developing, testing and enhancing software solutions based on requirements from a multitude of stakeholders including researchers, team leads and program managers.
Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience. * Strong software engineer experienced with large-scale software systems * Programming experience in C++ with a desire to learn new programming languages * Experience working with two or more of the following: web application development, open source operating environments, distributed/parallel computing systems, robotic systems, data visualization, information retrieval and/or networking * Good understanding of maths
Preferred Qualifications; * Master’s or further education * Experience using Python * Interest in AI

We do research differently at Ascent. Our team of Research Scientists are embedded throughout the engineering organization, allowing for large-scale tests and the ability to deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly. Ideas come from internal projects as well as collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world. Research Scientists work on real-world problems including creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures in artificial intelligence, robotics, data mining, hardware and software performance, improving compilers to holographic models, and much more. But you stay connected to your research roots as an active contributor to the wider research community by partnering with universities and publishing papers.
Responsibilities * Design, implement and evaluate models, agents and software prototypes of perceptual processing. * Report and present research findings and developments including status and results clearly and efficiently both internally and externally, verbally and in writing. * Suggest and engage in team collaborations to meet research goals. * Work with external collaborators and maintain relationships with relevant research labs and key individuals as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications * PhD in a technical field or equivalent practical experience
Preferred Qualifications * PhD in machine learning, robotics, computer science or neuroscience * Relevant experience to the position such as post-doctoral roles, a proven track record of publications or deep neural network architectures.

Our research team at Ascent focuses on machine learning including but not limited to deep neural models, reinforcement learning algorithms and biologically inspired models with with the goal of building general purpose learning algorithms for robotic systems.
Research Engineers work on diverse and stimulating range of projects including: developing cutting edge algorithms and prototype applications, providing software design and programming support to research projects, along with architecting and implementing software libraries.

* BSc/BEng degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, machine learning or equivalent (MSc/MEng preferable). * Expert in C/C++ and experienced in at least one scripting language such as Lua, Python or Matlab and a desire to learn new programming languages * Experience with implementing numerical methods and data visualization * Good knowledge of algorithm design
